Campaigning ends for Dwarahat by-poll

DEHRA DUN, OCT. 11. A rather low-key canvassing for the upcoming by-election for the Dwarahat Assembly seat in Almora district of Uttaranchal ended on a peaceful note this evening. The constituency has 64,125 voters who will go to the polls this coming Wednesday.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal ( UKD) president and MLA, Vipin Tripathi, recently. This party has fielded the late leader's son, Pushpesh -- a young man doing his Ph.D. The Congress has fielded a newcomer, former District Sports Officer, Mahesh Negi, who has joined politics after quitting his job. The BJP candidate is Mohan Singh Adhikari.

Although the fight mainly is among the UKD, the Congress and the BJP, the Samajwadi Party has fielded Chani Ram, the Bahujan Samaj Party has put up Vinod Kumar, and two more independents are trying to enter the Vidhan Sabha from here.
