Journalists seek new wage board

NEW DELHI: A large number of newspaper employees under the banner of the Delhi Union of Journalists vowed to intensify their struggle for fulfilment of their ten-point charter of demands at a meeting at the Gandhi Peace Foundation here on Thursday.

The demands include immediate constitution of a new wage board, amendments to the Working Journalists Act to prohibit employment of journalists on contract basis, and appointment of a Media Commission to look into the entire media scenario that has undergone a sea change since the last Press Commission report a decade ago.

Assumes charge

NEW DELHI: Lieutenant-General L. P. Sadhotra took charge as the new Director-General Medical Services (Army) from Lieutenant-General R. Rai on Thursday.

A graduate from Jammu and Kashmir University in Srinagar, Gen. Sadhotra completed his super-speciality in plastic surgery from PGI in Chandigarh. A plastic surgeon of international repute, he has been a member of the Association of Surgeons and Plastic Surgeons of India. He has presented and published various research papers at national and international levels.

He has also commanded the prestigious Army Hospital (R and R) in Delhi Cantonment.

Focus on minority education

NEW DELHI: Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh inaugurated a "Colloquium on Education and the Muslims in India'' at Jamia Hamdard Convention Centre here on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the need to provide better opportunities to the minorities to raise their educational status and provide them the right place in the process of nation-building.

He lauded Jamia Hamdard's efforts in the sphere of education and promised all support to the university. The Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, Muhammad Iqbal, emphasised the need for more financial assistance for development of the university.

Health camp

NEW DELHI: Reaching out on completing 50 years of its establishment, the Delhi Bar Council organised a free health check up camp this past Tuesday. The camp was inaugurated by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Kapil Sibal.

Apart from organising a health camp, the Delhi Bar Council also organised a gala evening at FICCI Golden Jubilee Auditorium on Wednesday for recreation. The chief guest for the evening was the Union Minister for Law and Justice, H.R Bharadwaj. Other eminent personalities like Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Justice Y.K Sabharwal attended the function.
