BJP leaders demand CBI probe into power purchase

NEW DELHI NOV. 13. Two senior Delhi BJP leaders today accused the Secretary (Power), Jagdish Sagar, and the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), Chairman, V.K.Sood, of being hand in glove with the private power company -- BSES -- and going out of the way to oblige it by ensuring supply of electricity to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation at a much higher price.

In a statement here, the Leader of the Opposition, Jagdish Mukhi and the BJP Chief Whip, Nand Kishore Garg, demanded a CBI inquiry into the conspiracy hatched by them and other officials for ensuring profits to the private sector company at the expense of the public exchequer. They alleged that while BSES would be getting power at Rs. 1.32 paise from Transco, it would be supplying the same to DMRC at a huge profit of Rs. 4.60 paise which was nothing short of loot. The Metro rail would be using around 250 million units of power every year and one can image the amount of money the private company would make at the expense of the people of Delhi.

Charging them with playing into the hands of the private power companies, Mr. Mukhi demanded that instead of the private companies, Transco should directly supply power to DMRC which would put very little burden on the organisation and the people of Delhi. Mr. Garg said the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, was turning a blind eye to all these startling facts and warned that this could well become a major issue in the coming days.

The BJP leaders charged that the Sheila Dikshit Government was also obliging the private power companies in order to ensure generation of funds for the Congress party to contest Assembly polls next year. A detailed inquiry should be held into the whole affair and all those officials found guilty should be taken to task or placed under suspension pending inquiry. They also demanded the resignation of the Delhi Power Minister, Ajay Maken, and said they had written to the Lieutenant-Governor for conducting a detailed inquiry into the whole affair.

Mr. Mukhi also accused the Delhi Government of rushing through the recommendations regarding the delimitation of the constituencies in Delhi. It was unfortunate that the Government has submitted its views to the Delimitation Commission without even waiting for the report of the Committee constituted by the Delhi Assembly Speaker, Chaudhary Prem Singh.
