Ban on polythene bags showing good results

SHIMLA, AUG 1. The State Government, which had constituted the Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board, a few years ago, to protect the environment of the picturesque State of Himachal, has started yielding results. The Board was not only controlling the industrial pollution but was also taking necessary steps to conserve the natural resources by protecting environment pollution, claimed a Government spokesman.

The State Government recently took the much- needed decision of imposing a ban from June 14 on the use of polythene carry bags having thickness less than 70 microns and size less than 12"x18". The spokesman claimed that the State Government has been sensitive to the need of protecting environment and as a result the Himachal Pradesh Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act was enacted in1995.

The spokesman further said that there was a provision to impose a fine on distributors, stockists and retailers violating the ban on use of polythene bags and it had authorized various Government functionaries to take necessary action under the Act. In order to have a positive impact of the ban, a sustained campaign was also being launched by the concerned officers. These steps had already started showing good results, claimed the spokesman.
