Income Tax officials arrested

NEW DELHI: The CBI on Sunday arrested two senior Income Tax officials, including an Assistant Commissioner, for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 50,000 from a jeweller.

According to the CBI, Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax K C Chugh and Inspector S K Chopra were arrested by the CBI for allegedly taking bribe from a jeweller after threatening to seal his shop for some irregularities in the gold stocks.

According to the CBI, Chugh, who will be retiring on January 31, had gone along with Chopra to the jeweller's shop on January 20 and demanded a bribe of Rs 25 lakh, which was later negotiated to Rs 2.5 lakh.

On Saturday, Chugh allegedly called the jeweller and asked him to pay Rs 50,000 to Chopra as the first instalment towards the settled bribe amount.

The CBI laid a trap and arrested Chopra and later Chugh. The residence of the two officials were being searched and they would be produced before the designated court tomorrow, the CBI sources said.

Court directive to Govt.

NEW DELHI: Noting that manufacturers of spurious drugs were going scot-free owing to the tardy and improper investigations by the Drug Control and Licensing Authority, Delhi High Court has passed a slew of directions to the authorities to combat the menace.

Justice S K Agarwal issued the directions while deciding an appeal filed by the authorities challenging the acquittal of an alleged spurious drug dealer by the trial court.

The High Court ordered that henceforth on the recovery of spurious adulterated drugs, Drug Control authorities should invariably lodge an FIR at the police station concerned and, if necessary, subject the offender to custodial interrogation to trace the original manufacturers.

Award for PUCL

NEW DELHI: The People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has been presented with the first Nani Palkhiwala memorial award for contributing in preservation of civil liberties, an official release said here on Sunday.

The award, constituted by the Nani A Palkhivala Memorial Trust, was given to the PUCL at a function at the National Centre for Performing Arts in Mumbai.

The Jury for the award comprised former Chief Justices M N Venkatchaliah and Justice S P Bharucha.

Fire outside Palam airport area

NEW DELHI: Fire broke out outside the domestic airport at Palam area late tonight but there were no casualties, fire department officials said.

The blaze was reported in a pandal erected near the airport at 10 p.m., they said.

Five fire tenders rushed to the spot and the flames was doused within 15 minutes, they said.

Three alleged

auto-lifters held

NEW DELHI: Three alleged auto-lifters have been arrested at Adarsh Nagar in North-West Delhi on January 19. Two stolen motorcycles were recovered from their possession.

According to the police, Pawan Kumar was arrested when he was riding a stolen motorcycle. During interrogation, he allegedly revealed that he had stolen the vehicle from Rohini.

In another case, the Adarsh Nagar police arrested Mohammad Fahad and Deva Brata Shah, from whom they seized another stolen motorcycle.
