Act, don't promise, Delhi BJP tells Ananth

NEW DELHI NOV. 13. The Delhi BJP and the party MPs and MLAs are up in arms against the Union Urban Development Minister, Ananth Kumar, for having failed to fulfil the commitments made during recent months. The local party leaders and cadres are also unhappy over the manner in which the Central leadership is handling BJP affairs in Delhi and other parts of the country.

Insiders in the party say that during a brainstorming session at the Pandit Pant Marg party office held here last evening, strong resentment prevailed over the attitude and conduct of Mr. Kumar within the party. It was pointed out that the Union Minister was proving to be least helpful and in fact an obstacle in the fulfilment of various commitments made by the party to the people of Delhi. The meeting, chaired by the Delhi BJP president, Madan Lal Khurana, was attended among others by the Chief Whip in Delhi Assembly, Nand Kishore Garg, the former Minister, S.P.Ratawal, the Leader of Opposition in MCD, Subhash Arya, the party spokesman, the party secretary, Vijender Kumar.

Sources said almost all the leaders were of the view that Mr. Kumar had let down the party in Delhi and was taking it towards a certain electoral defeat. It was pointed out that the three main demands put forth by Mr.Khurana after he took over as the BJP president in July have not been met till date. In fact, no action has been initiated on these demands despite repeated promises made by Mr. Ananth Kumar. One of them said Mr. Kumar was the most inaccessible Minister and did not meet BJP leaders or workers of Delhi. Similarly, even the party MPs and MLAs have complained against the manner in which Mr.Kumar had ignored their demands.

It is learnt that Mr. Khurana pointed out during the meeting that things were getting difficult with each passing day for the party. The demand for regularisation of unauthorised colonies, change of land use from industrial to commercial and regularisation of illegal constructions in DDA flats had not been met till date despite repeated assurances by the Union Minister.

Adding insult to injury, the DDA went ahead and filed an affidavit in the court that stating that it did not intend to change the land use from industrial to commercial. This despite the assurance by Mr. Kumar to a BJP delegation led by Mr. Khurana that a Cabinet note on this issue would be prepared and presented before the Union Cabinet within 15 days.

``The Union Urban Development Minister is only famous for two Bs. Every time you call him up on the phone, either he is in the bathroom or in Bangalore,'' remarked a senior BJP leader during the meeting. Further it was pointed out that during the Workers' Convention of Delhi BJP held on August 18 at the Talkatora Stadium, the Minister had committed in front of the central party leaders that he would be available for problems related to Delhi three times a week and would also take a round of the Capital along with Mr.Khurana. "What to talk about three days a week, he has not even done once during the last three months ever since he made this commitment.

He is not living up to the promises he made and in the process is letting down the party and Delhi BJP leaders down which is going to hurt us badly,'' a senior BJP leader present during the meeting remarked.

Apart from this, it was felt that the handling of affairs in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the country by the Central leadership was not satisfactory and serious introspection by the House was needed to save the situation.

It is believed that the Delhi BJP leadership would take up the issue of Mr. Ananth Kumar and other related matters with <243>the Central leadership soon in order to prevent any further damage to the party's cause.
