NEW DELHI: As a young boy he made paintings for various children's magazines.

And now that hobby has become a full-fledged profession for Jaipur-based artist Hitendra Singh Bhati whose weeklong exhibition of paintings opened at the All-India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS) gallery here on Monday.

Titled "After Hard Work", the exhibition mainly features rickshaw-pullers, toy sellers and bandmasters relaxing after a hard day's work.

Stating that it was the small things in life that matter, Hitendra explains: "In the ongoing exhibition I have basically shown how men relax after working for long hours. I have depicted a rickshaw-puller playing a flute after a hard day's work. It is not necessary that life can only be enjoyed within the comforts of a luxurious five-star hotel. I sometimes ignore the smiling faces of people. I am more interested in portraying the life of people who struggle to make ends meet."

24-painting series

Hitendra took a full year to complete the 24-painting series that has been done predominantly in acrylic on canvas.

"In my paintings, I go in for earthy colours like grey and yellow ochre," he says.

After graduating in science from Udaipur University in 1999, Hitendra did his post-graduation in drawing and painting from the same University in 2001. He has participated in various exhibitions across the country including the 47th National Exhibition of Art at Lalit Kala Akademi here in 2004; the 77th All-India Art Exhibition at AIFACS in 2005; the Rupam Art Exhibition at Udaipur in 2004; and the 10th Annual Art Exhibition at Bhilwara in 2004. His collections are part of many private galleries both in the country and overseas.

For his works, Hitendra was honoured at the India Art Teachers' Exhibition in New Delhi in 2006.
