Young man jumps into river to escape police, dies

A young man, who was caught gambling, jumped into a river to escape from policemen chasing him and died following which a Sub-Inspector was suspended on Thursday in Barar area here, police said.

The body of 19-year-old Dhyan Singh was fished out of river Pandu in the afternoon, sparking protests from the locals, who even blocked roads, demanding suspension of the in-charge of police check post.

Sub-Inspector Balaram Singh, the in-charge of Gujani check post, was later suspended. According to the police spokesperson, a group of young men were caught gambling by a team of policemen on Wednesday near Gujani check post in Barar area.

When the police chased them , Dhyan Singh jumped into the river to escape while others managed to flee from the scene. The locals and family members of Dhyan Singh alleged that he jumped into the river as he got scared by the policemen chasing them.

They also demanded compensation of Rs.2lakh for the family members of Dhyan Singh.- PTI
