New Delhi: People from all walks of life on Saturday joined special prayers offered in religious places across the country for the speedy recovery of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who underwent a coronary bypass surgery.

At the Golden temple in Amritsar, head priest Gyani Jaswinder Singh led the prayers which were attended by Prime Minister’s brother Surjit Singh Kohli while a special puja was organised at Kamakhya temple in Guwahati for 76-year-old Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam.

“We are also aware that millions of our countrymen and Punjabis all over the world are praying for his good health,” Mr. Kohli said. Other shrines in U.P., Kolkata, Amritsar and Guwahati also saw special prayers for Mr. Singh, whose surgery lasted nearly 11 hours at AIIMS here.

“All citizens of Guwahati irrespective of their faiths are praying for Prime Minister’s health. We pray to God that he recovers soon and resumes office,” a priest, leading special prayers in the Gurdwara, said.

The Prime Minister’s sisters -- Naveen Kaur and Preetam Kaur -- also joined a mass prayer at a gurdwara in Kolkata. In Kanpur, prayers were held at the Mata Vaibhav temple and organisers said they have lighted ‘akhand jyoti’ (holy flame) which will continue till the Prime Minister recovers fully.

Prominent leaders, including chief ministers also wished for early recovery of Mr. Singh. Special prayers were offered early on Saturday morning at various gurdwaras in the national Capital. “Many people offered prayers at the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara (near Connaught Place), the Sisganj Sahib Gurdwara (in Chandni Chowk) and Gurdwara Gurunanak Pio (at GT Karnal Road),for the Prime Minister’s successful operation and his speedy recovery,” Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) President Paramjeet Singh Sarna, said.
