Search for best young driving talent

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: To promote road safety, Maruti Suzuki India and Autocar India have instituted a “Maruti Suzuki-Autocar Young Driver-2010” contest, a nationwide search for India’s best young driving talent. Open to all individuals in the age group of 18 to 30 years, the competition will test knowledge of traffic rules, awareness of road safety aspects and driving skill.

The competition will be held in three phases. The winning finalist will be adjudged the Driver Of The Year and awarded a Maruti Suzuki A-star car as a grand prize. He will also be designated ambassador of safe driving and promoted by Autocar India and Maruti Suzuki on various platforms.

Key to the future

According to Maruti Suzuki India executive director Mayank Pareek, “Being the youngest nation of the world, India’s future lies in the hands of its youth. India has the second highest number of road accidents in the world as many people still do not know the right skills behind the wheels. We have initiated a series of programmes to promote road safety in India, and this contest is one more step in that direction.”

“The programme is aimed at creating a culture for road safety among the youth by highlighting the importance of sensible and safe driving skills,” says Autocar India editor Hormazd Sorabjee.

After preliminary contests, 30 finalists from across the country will be flown in to Delhi for the final where they will be evaluated for their driving skills at the Institute of Driving Training and Research under the supervision of Maruti Driving School’s driving instructors and judges from Autocar India. They will be evaluated on various parameters such as smoothness and vehicle control during emergency situations.
