Prospects of evacuation at Jharia brighten

Ranchi: A fortnight after a demand was made in Parliament for steps to check the spread of subterranean fire in Jharkhand’s Jharia, the State Government has in principle agreed on a rehabilitation package planned by the Coal India Limited (CIL).

The approval came after a meeting between Jharkhand Chief Secretary A K Basu and CIL chairman Partha Bhattacharya here on Wednesday, official sources said on Thursday.

Master plan

The CIL’s master plan-2006 had estimated an expenditure of Rs.6,358.45 crore, 50 per cent of which would be reportedly contributed by the CIL, for rehabilitating around 67,000 families residing in Jharia, dealing with the fire and diversion of railway lines and road within 10 years.

The evacuees would have the choice of receiving a house or an alternative land or value of their land under the rehabilitation package, the sources said. - PTI
