Poor power supply to Amethi, Rae Bareli angers Congress

The Congress walked out of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday protesting against poor power supply to Rae Bareli and Amethi (now renamed by Chief Minister Mayawati as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar district ) and the failure of the Mayawati Government to commit itself to uninterrupted supply to the two areas. Rae Bareli and Amethi are represented in the Lok Sabha by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi.

Energy Minister Ramveer Upadhyaya was quick to remind the Congress MLAs that the power problem was not limited to Rae Bareli and Amethi but covered the entire State. He urged Congress Legislature Party leader Pramod Tiwari to ensure more electricity to UP from the Central quota and the power woes would cease.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Lalji Verma said that for the Congress “Rae Bareli and Amethi are UP.”

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, the Congress MLAs from Rae Bareli and Amethi, including Amita Singh, Shiv Balak Pasi, Shiv Ganesh Lodhi and Ashok Kumar Singh, lamented that only three to four hours of electricity is being supplied to the two districts. The poor power supply coupled with low voltage had sounded the death knell of industrial units in Rae Bareli and Amethi, the MLAs said accusing the State Government of according step-motherly treatment to the two areas. A walk-out was also staged by the BJP over the power issue as its members expressed dissatisfaction over the assurances given by the Government for improving the situation.
