Municipal engineer suspended

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has suspended an assistant engineer in connection with the death of 78-year-old Trilok Nath Makan who fell into a pit in Malviya Nagar here over the weekend. The pit had been dug up for installation of a streetlight pole.

Municipal Commissioner K. S. Mehra had ordered an inquiry into the incident following which Bharat Singh was suspended. “Bharat Singh has been suspended for lack of supervision due to which Mr. Makan lost his life. Also, the contractor will be penalised and might be blacklisted too,” an MCD official said.

According to the police, Mr. Makan had fallen into the pit as there were no barricades around. Moreover, there was no warning sign board in place and the area was not properly lit up.
