NEW DELHI: An Uttar Pradesh police head constable posted at Sahibabad police station in neighbouring Ghaziabad district is alleged to have criminally assaulted a minor girl inside the police station premises over the weekend.

The policeman, Shyampal Singh of Meerut, has been dismissed from service and is absconding.

The victim’s family, who stay at Gangotri Vihar of Bhajanpura area in East Delhi, knew Shyampal and he had even taken the 14-year-old girl out on a few occasions.

On Friday afternoon he allegedly took her out in his car on some pretext and then dropped her back home around 8 p.m. He had a cup of tea with the family and then left.

“After the policeman left, the victim’s mother noticed that the girl appeared traumatised. On being coaxed, she narrated the entire incident to her mother. The mother along with the victim came to the police station around midnight and a case was registered after the medical examination confirmed assault. A raid was mounted at the Sahibabad police station to arrest Shyampal but he had fled by then,” said Station House Officer of Bhajanpura, Rajkumar Sharma.

It is alleged that Shyampal, who was staying in the police station, took the girl to his room, offered her a cold drink laced with sedatives and criminally assaulted her.

The girl is a Class VIII student. Her father, a daily wager, had died a decade ago. Her mother works as a domestic help.

“The victim’s family came to know Shyampal about eight months ago when their two-wheeler was impounded by the Sahibabad police in connection with some minor offence. The policeman bailed them out and struck a friendship with the family. He would often visit the family and take the girl to the police station. He would introduce her as his daughter to his colleagues,” said a senior police officer.

The Ghaziabad police have also constituted three teams to arrest Shyampal.
