NEW DELHI: A man has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a five-year-old boy in New Ashok Nagar here for a ransom of Rs.20,000 and then killing him.

Harsh, son of a vegetable vendor, was on his way to school when he was kidnapped on January 22. His father, Shambhu, received ransom calls in which the kidnapper demanded Rs.20,000. The police tracked down the calls and found that they were being made from public telephone booths. Subsequently a trap was laid and the accused was arrested. He was identified as Achche Lal, an acquaintance of Shambhu.

During interrogation, Achche purportedly disclosed that he had strangled the victim and disposed of the body in a canal as he feared that the child would reveal his name if he was released. Achche hails from Balia village in Uttar Pradesh and knew Shambhu as he also belonged to a nearby village.
