NEW DELHI: Delhi State Election Commissioner S.P. Marwah is likely to announce the categories of the newly demarcated 272 municipal wards on Saturday, setting in motion the process for holding elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

The Election Commissioner has also called an all-party meeting on Monday to reach a consensus on the election dates. According to sources, of the 272 newly delimitated wards, 226 are likely to be put in the general category, while 46 would be reserved for Scheduled Castes. In both these categories, one-third of the seats will be reserved for women.

Until now the political parties could not decide on the candidates for the elections as the seats were not categorised. From next week onward hectic political activity can be expected in the Capital for the municipal elections.

The all-party meeting on Monday will discuss the election schedule after which the dates would be announced. Sources in the State Election Commission said polling is likely to be held in the last week of March. As per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, the new House should be constituted by April 7 and its first meeting held by April 10.
