New Delhi: After languishing in Tihar jail for more than 21 years, a life convict has knocked the doors of the Delhi High Court seeking his release on the ground that his ailing mother needs his help.
On receipt of a letter from Shiv Varan, sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 in a murder case, a Division Bench of Chief Justice M.K. Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Khanna converted it into a writ petition and directed the city police to file a status report by September 14.
In the letter, seeking his release, Varan said there was no one at home to look after his ailing mother who needed proper care. Appealing to the court to consider his case, he said the court could see the record of his conduct in the jail. He contended that “some other convicts sentenced for life have been released by the jail authorities while I am languishing in the jail.”
