Held for setting colleague afire

NEW DELHI: Abhishek Sharma, a 23-year-old call centre employee who had allegedly set his colleague Mandeep on fire here on Friday for rejecting his marriage proposal, has been arrested.

The police said on Saturday that the accused was arrested on Friday night while loitering about near his house in Model Town. He was sent to 14 days’ judicial custody by a local court on Saturday.

During interrogation, Abhishek purportedly told the police that he got acquainted with Mandeep some six months ago after he joined Sai Telecommunications in Saraswati Vihar. He claimed that she had been pressurising him to marry her. Abhishek also informed the police that he had clearly told Mandeep that he could not marry without the consent of his parents.

Mandeep, who suffered 25 per cent burns, had told the police that Abhishek had been pestering her after she had turned down his marriage proposal and complained to her boss.

The bizarre incident took place in the early hours of Friday when Abhishek stopped his car near Queen Mary School, asked Mandeep to step out of the vehicle, and allegedly set her ablaze after pouring some inflammable liquid on her. A Police Control Room van patrolling in the area had taken Mandeep to J P Hospital, while Abhishek had vanished from the scene.
