He was jailed in fire tragedy case

NEW DELHI: Former Uphaar cinema manager Ajit Chowdhary, who was lodged in Tihar Central Jail, died in Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital here over the weekend. He was 65. Mr. Chowdhary had not been keeping well for a long time and was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital after his condition deteriorated on Friday afternoon. He died around 8 p.m.

‘Cardiac arrest’

“He apparently died of cardiac arrest. An inquiry by a Metropolitan Magistrate has been ordered,” said a Tihar Jail official on Saturday.

Mr. Chowdhary along with former manager Nirmal Chopra and real estate barons Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal had surrendered in the court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge I. K. Kochhar on September 11, a day after the Supreme Court cancelled their bail in the Uphaar cinema fire tragedy case.

All four were lodged in the same barracks of jail No.1.

Fifty-nine people had died in the devastating fire that engulfed the theatre owned by the Ansal brothers here during the matinee show of Bollywood film “Border” on June 13, 1997.
