Five killed in building collapse

NEW DELHI: Five persons, including three children, were killed and 12 seriously injured when an under-construction third floor of a building collapsed in Karawal Nagar here on Wednesday.

According to the Fire Service Department, the incident took place around 4-45 p.m. when the third floor of the building caved in and the debris also fell on an adjoining building. Occupants of both the buildings were trapped under the rubble.

Half a dozen fire tenders were pressed into action and excavators were deployed to remove the debris. The search operation went on till late at night and the rescue teams pulled out the bodies of Sania (2), Nagma (4) and Zubair (5), all three children of the building owner, Pappu. The rescue team also pulled out his wife Rani (35) and a worker Sameen Alam (19) and rushed them to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital where they were declared brought dead. Pappu was not at home when the incident took place. The injured, several of whom are tailors and worked in a unit located on the ground floor of the building, have been kept under medical observation. Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ram Babu Sharma visited the building collapse site and helped in the rescue efforts.
