NEW DELHI: An eminent criminal defence lawyer, Pandit R. K. Naseem, was hit on his head and seriously injured allegedly in a brawl that broke out in Dabri here over the weekend. His condition is said to be critical.

Auto-parts factory

The 65-year-old lawyer is involved in a legal dispute with his brother-in-law and former BJP MLA Vinod Sharma and had gone to the latter’s auto-parts factory in Dabri in the morning when the incident took place.

“A case was registered against Vinod Sharma and his men at Manesar police station on January 1 for allegedly breaking into an auto-parts factory owned by Mr. Naseem’s son Sameer. When a Haryana police team came here to make arrests in this connection, the local police intervened and asked Mr. Naseem to come to the spot for verification in this regard. When he reached the spot along with his sons Sameer and Rajiv an altercation broke out. In the melee, Mr. Naseem was hit on the head with a wooden stick causing serious head injuries,” said Mr. Naseem’s nephew Vivek, an engineer.

Mr. Naseem was rushed to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri.

Critical condition

Doctor Rajiv Seth, who is attending on him, said: “Mr. Naseem was brought to the hospital around 11 a.m. and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. He has multiple head injuries. He is on life support system. His condition is very critical.”

Mr. Naseem has been a defence lawyer for Sushil Ansal in the Uphaar fire tragedy.

He has also represented Santosh Kumar Singh, son of a police officer, in the Priyadarshini Mattoo murder case.

Mr. Vivek alleged that the incident took place in presence of the Delhi police who remained mute spectator.

“Several senior officers of the Dabri police station were present at the spot, but chose to turn a blind eye. We have closed-circuit television recordings of the incident which will nail the culprit,” he added.

An attempt to murder case has been registered at the Dabri police station.
