Handiwork of hooligans, suspect police

NEW DELHI: In a mysterious fire, 11 vehicles, including a car, were gutted at Preet Vihar here in the early hours of Tuesday.

The police suspect it to be the handiwork of hooligans and have registered a case of creating mischief with the intent to cause damage and initiated investigation into the matter.

“It is difficult to say who actually set fire to the vehicles. But prima facie it appears to be the handiwork of some miscreants. We have initiated an investigation but there are no clues as yet,” said a police officer.

The incident took place around 3-30 in the morning and a total of 11 vehicles — nine motorcycles, a scooter and a Wagon-R car — were allegedly set afire by some unidentified men in Jagatpuri and Jiter Nagar of East Delhi. The vehicles were all parked outside in the street.

“I got up when smoke began entering my house. I ran out and found that my two motorcycles and a scooter were ablaze. Soon several people from the neighbouring areas also gathered at the spot. We then poured buckets of water on the vehicles and put out the fire. Later we learnt that some more vehicles were also gutted in a mysterious fire in our own locality and the neighbouring Jiter Nagar,” said Manish Kumar, who works for a garments export unit in Noida.

Manish recalled that it was the first such incident in the area.

“Pilferage of fuel from two-wheelers is common, but it was the first time that vehicles were set on fire. It is difficult to say who is behind it. But the vehicles seem to have been selectively targeted,” said Manish.
