Deve Gowda warns against creating another Singur

NEW DELHI: The former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) president, H.D. Deve Gowda, on Monday warned Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa not to bring about a Singur-like situation in the State favouring the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises Limited (NICE) for the implementation of the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project, by providing land against the will of the people.

Singur became famous when Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee led a long agitation of farmers in West Bengal against the Left Front government’s decision to acquire land for the Nano car project of the Tatas.

In his second open letter to Mr. Yeddyurappa released here, Mr. Gowda threatened that if any decision was taken “contrary to the lawful demands made in this letter as per directions and judgments of the courts, poor people of Karnataka will have no option but to continue their agitation which I am dutybound to guide to prevent it.”

“People watching”

He said the people of the State were watching and “if you have any care for court directions as you profess publicly, you should demand 460 acres to be given back, reject the demand for another 764 acres and put on hold your decision reversing the August 30, 2007 Cabinet decision to prevent NICE from selling or alienating any land meant for toll roads around Bangalore.”

Besides, he said, Mr. Yeddyurappa should stop any sale deeds to be executed in favour of NICE until the Supreme Court disposed of NICE’s contempt petitions together with U.R. Ananthamurthy’s writ petition and the NICE SLP challenging the Karnataka High Court order referring the JD(S) book on frauds in BMIC to the Lok Ayukta. “Voicing the voice of the poor,” Mr. Gowda said the Chief Minister should remember that “misery and misfortune you seek to bestow on the poor and have-nots and their sighs of pain and helplessness will not be silenced and this atrocity of depriving people of their livelihood and roofs over their head to feed the endless greed of NICE promoters cannot be silenced and will find expression in ways that will put the end to your misrule.”
