Dalits demand quota in private sector

NEW DELHI: The All-India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations staged a dharna at Jantar Mantar here on Monday demanding reservation for Dalits and Adivasis in the private sector.

Addressing the protestors, Confederation president Udit Raj said the number of government jobs was shrinking because of privatisation and globalisation. The Government should, therefore, introduce reservation for Dalits and Adivasis in the private sector to bring them into the mainstream, he added.

Confederation general secretary Indira Athavle said the Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in December 2004 but no further action was taken. “The Government presented it in the Lok Sabha in February 2009. One year into its second term, the UPA has made no further progress.”
