NEW DELHI: A 23-year-old call centre employee and his friend have been arrested by the South Delhi police for allegedly attempting to criminally assault his wife and physically abusing her. The victim's brother-in-law, who is also an accused in the case, is absconding.

According to the police, the complainant, a call centre employee in Gurgaon, was picked up by her husband Kamal Sandilaya and his friend Saurabh Kataria in an Alto car from outside her office on Saturday night.

The two beat her up and Saurabh allegedly made an attempt to criminally assault her. She was later abandoned in an unconscious state near Dhaula Kuan, the police said.

Both the accused were arrested on Sunday night based on the complaint of the victim, who is now recuperating in Jayaprakash Narayan Apex Trauma Care Centre of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences.

According to the victim, she fell in love with Kamal while working at a call centre in Gurgaon and they got married on May 22, 2005.

"But soon there was trouble at home and Kamal frequently beat me up and even demanded dowry. He used to return home late in the night in an inebriated state and abuse me. Later I learnt that he even had extra-marital relations. We started staying separately since last December," added the victim, who has a son from the marriage.

Complaint filed

She filed a complaint with the Delhi Police Women Cell in February this year but withdrew it after she was allegedly threatened by Kamal. A month later, the two decided to sink their differences and started staying together in a rented accommodation at Sheikh Sarai. But the reunion did not last long and the two fell out over Kamal's alleged extra-marital relations with a colleague.

"On Saturday, they forcibly picked me up from outside my office, beat me up, tried to criminally assault me and then abandoned me near Dhaula Kuan in an unconscious state. After regaining consciousness, I called up my brother and he dropped me at my in-laws' house in Chirag Dilli. Again Kamal, his brother Deepak and Saurabh beat me up and threw me outside Safdarjung Hospital early on Sunday morning. They then informed my parents. Some passers-by admitted me to the trauma centre," she said.
