NEW DELHI: A 44-year-old businessman, his teenaged son and brother-in-law have been arrested for allegedly robbing an executive of a sport lifestyle company of Rs.5.6 lakh in Rajouri Garden this past Monday.

Amar Thapa, a PUMA company sales executive, was on his way to Punjab National Bank in a cycle-rickshaw to deposit the cash around noon on July 13 when two men on a motorcycle snatched the bag containing the money and his mobile phone. Amar told the police that the accused were carrying pistols.

During investigation, the police found that as the bank remained closed on Sundays the amount of money deposited on Mondays was more compared to other days. It pointed the needle of suspicion on an insider and the police interrogated the employees of the company’s showroom in West Gate shopping mall at length and also verified their lifestyle and conduct. The breakthrough came when the victim, Amar Thapa and constable Niyajuddin, who had given chase to the snatchers, recollected the registration number of the motorcycle.

The police found that the two-wheeler had been sold by its registered owner to Sudhir Jain of Laxmi Nagar. Sudhir was traced and the police found that his son Akshay (18) was working at the PUMA showroom.

Toy pistols

Initially, the father-son duo tried to mislead the police saying that their motorcycle had been stolen two hours before the incident and they had even lodged a complaint at the Shakarpur police station in the afternoon. On sustained interrogation, Akshay purportedly confessed to having committed the crime and told the police that his father was in deep financial crisis and they hatched a conspiracy along with their relative Manish Gupta to rob the executive of the company while he was carrying the cash to the bank.

The trio bought two toys pistols for the purpose and surveyed the showroom and the route taken by the executive.

On the day of incident, Akshay informed his father and his accomplice as soon as the executive left the showroom. The two robbed the executive and abandoned their motorcycle while trying to flee.
