Buddhadeb calls on Governor

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee called on Governor M. K. Narayanan at Raj Bhavan here on Wednesday evening. They were understood to have discussed various issues including of law and order.

The meeting lasted about 50 minutes, according to a Raj Bhavan official.

It was held less than a week before the seventh round of tripartite talks between the Centre, the State Government and the leadership of the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) to find a way out of the political impasse in the Darjeeling hills.

The next round of tripartite talks on the situation in Darjeeling is to be held on August 17. It is expected to focus on an interim administrative set-up that has been proposed for the Darjeeling hills to replace the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council.

The State Government has been asked by the Centre to submit its views on the proposed interim body.

The State Government is also keeping a close watch on the progress of the joint operations against the Maoists in parts of the south-west of the State.
