NEW DELHI: Despite the efforts of the Union Health Ministry, 37 cases of polio have been reported in the country so far this year as against 20 in 2005.

Another piece of bad news is that while in the past two years polio cases were confined to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, this year it has also been reported in two more -- Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Of the 37 registered cases, 34 are of P1 polio and three of P3 variety. P2 virus has been eradicated from the country.

U.P. blamed

Earlier, a study had pointed to Uttar Pradesh being a hurdle in the polio eradication drive. The State was also seen as the epicentre of the Capital's never-ending polio woes.

Officials say that the year 2002 saw a significant rise in polio cases at the national level and of the 1,600 cases reported, Uttar Pradesh accounted for 1,242 of them.
