Incidents of slab collapse, water pipeline leak, and fire added to the monsoon woes of Mumbaikars on Thursday.

A mother and her son from Kalyan, who were visiting their family at the government colony in Bandra (east), were injured when a portion of the roof collapsed on them on Thursday morning. The incident occurred in building no. 293 around 4.15 a.m. Vaishali Sawant (35) was sleeping in her relatives’ house with her son Naitik (9) when the slab crashed on them. They were taken to Bhabha hospital where they are undergoing treatment. Both are reported stable.

“We all woke up due to the noise and my daughter’s cries for help. My sons and son-in-law rushed to remove the debris and my son-in-law took them to Bandra government hospital. We were advised to take them to Bhabha hospital,” Sunanda Mahale, Ms. Savant’s mother, said.

Ms. Savant sustained injuries to her stomach while her son suffered wounds in his right shoulder, treating doctor Raghu Varma said.

“Naitik has lacerations between his right shoulder and axilla region and mild aberrations on both his legs. The mother sustained blunt abdominal trauma with contused hematoma on her left groin area. We have advised her to consume primarily liquids for the time being so as to not strain her abdominal region,” Dr. Varma said.

Yogesh Sawant, Ms. Savant’s husband, works as a taxi driver, and since he had not left for work, he was able to drive them to the hospital, relatives said.

“This building was built in the 1950s. I think it’s time residents were evacuated and the building redeveloped,” an officer from Kherwadi police station said.

Pipeline leak

In the second incident, 1,200 millimetres (approximately four feet) of Tansa pipeline leaked at the Batliwala junction near Parel flyover around 6.30 a.m.

It was initially suspected to be a burst, but when staffers from the hydraulic engineering (HE) department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation dug a trench to examine the pipeline, it was found to be a leak. Workers are trying to restore it by night. However, supply to Lalbaug and Kalachowkie might be affected. The pipeline supplies water to Dadar and Parel between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. every day. Most of the supply for the day was done by the time of the incident after which it was shut.

“The HE department has told me that work will be complete by 3 a.m. and regular supply will be restored to all areas ,” Kishor Desai, assistant municipal commissioner, F South ward, said.

Ballard Pier fire

The third incident was that of a fire reported at Sant Niwas building in Ballard Pier around 12 noon. Two fire engines were rushed to the spot. The Level 1 fire was doused in an hour. An assistant fire station officer, Fort, suffered minor injuries, but was treated in a brigade ambulance.
