Widespread protest in district

KOTTAYAM, JULY 24. The agitation taken out by the CPI(M) feeder organisations in the light of the suicide of an engineering student Rajani S. Anand on account of financial constraints led to sporadic incidents of violence in the district today.

According to the police, no one was arrested in connection with the violent incidents. The branch of the Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) at Changanassery was attacked by protesters who threw stones at the office. The protesters belonged to the SFI, DYFI and CITU, the police said.

A case has been registered.

In another incident, a minibus (KL3A-5641) belonging to the Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Sciences was damaged by agitating students near the Mahatma Gandhi University. The management claimed damages worth more than Rs. 60,000, the police said. The CPI(M) feeder organisations took out protest marches in the town and other places in the district today.
