Waste processing trial under way

A waste processing trial is under way at the Choolpuram trenching yard in Guruvayur municipality.

A Kochi-based private company is carrying out the trial.

The trial involves turning biodegradable waste into bio-fertilizers.

Biodegradable waste can be turned into compost in 45 days by using bacteria that accelerates the composting process.

As little as 1 kg of material containing bacteria can decompose 3,000 kg of waste and turn it into 750 kg of bio-fertilisers.

“Kollam Corporation had adopted this method recently,” said an expert involved in the trial.

Municipal chairman T.T. Sivadasan said that if the trial was successful, the method would be implemented on a larger scale.

“The Thumburmuzhi model of waste management is also under consideration,” he added.

Standing Committee chairman V.K. Sreeraman and Health Inspector T. Achuthan were also present at the launch of the trial recently.
