Vedi activists stage protest

KOZHIKODE, MARCH 11. Activists of the Hindu Aikya Vedi today staged a protest in front of the office of the North Zone Inspector General of Police demanding the arrest of the killers of the Vedi's Kannur secretary, T. Ashwini Kumar, on Thursday and the release of T. Suresh, Marad Araya Samajam, secretary, who had been taken into preventive custody.

Mr. Suresh, who is also the Vedi State secretary, was taken into preventive custody from Kannur Rashtriya Sweyamsevak Sangham (RSS) district headquarters on Friday. He was later released at around 7.30 p.m. The Vedi also observed a hartal in Kannur today.

The Vedi Kozhikode district convener, P.K. Sahadevan, while addressing a large gathering of protesters in the evening, said that Mr. Suresh had gone to Kannur only to attend the funeral of Ashwini. But he was taken into custody. Tension prevailed in the Nadakkavu area when around 200 activists of the Vedi held a sit-in demonstration in front of the IG office there. The Kannur and Wayanad roads were blocked. The traffic had to be diverted for over an hour.

Meanwhile, a woman, Ambika of Pattarpalam, suffered minor injuries after some activists threw stones at buses near English Church Junction. The incident took place when activists were returning after protest.
