Tusker fighting for life

KOLLAM, MARCH 17. Fatigue caused by overwork resulted in a tusker, Hariharan, collapsing here this morning. In spite of efforts for five hours by a team of veterinary doctors and the mahout, the tusker is yet to get back on its feet.

The elephant underwent an eye operation last week and was yet to fully recover from the problem. It had also sustained injuries on its hind leg a few days ago when a lorry hit it from behind while being taken for a temple festival.

However, despite ill health, the tusker was taken to attend a temple festival at Panayam this morning, the vets said. Efforts are being made to get it back on its feet with the help of a crane. The vets said that once they succeed in making him stand, they intend to keep him standing with the help of props.
