KERALA

Total organic farming in 3 years

Kerala would become an organic farming State in three years, while the district would get the distinction by this December, Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan has said.

In its bid to re-establish the age-old traditional farming practice, the government will take up the task of turning Kerala into organic State in a phased manner he said while inaugurating ‘Jaivam-2014,’ a three-day State-level seminar and exhibition of organic farm produce at the Kasaragod Government High School on Monday.

Even though the application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides helps increase the weight of the produce, the practice does not enhance farming efficiency and quality and comes in the way of healthy living practice, he said. The function was organised by the Agricultural Department. The Minister called for change in people’s mindset to effectively use bio-pesticide and organic manure.

Seeds distributed

Grow bags and seeds were distributed at the function. Awards were given to farmers who excelled in the comprehensive vegetable farming scheme in the district.
