Temporary setback

Two days of street violence and hartal in the city have meant a temporary setback for the construction of the underpass at Palayam which is creeping towards the July 31 deadline. On Monday, the work site on the MLA hostel side of the underpass was the scene of a battle between the police and youth activists.

The rubble heaped at the site soon turned into a convenient weapon for the youth against the police. A truck and a dumper parked inside the worksite also became the target of the infuriated activists.

"The incident has proved costly at a time when the project schedule has been scaled up to meet the deadline. The hartal on Tuesday meant another day lost. What is more worrying is the fact that the work site is located on the route to the Assembly building. Every time an Assembly march is taken out, we may be forced to stop work", a project official said. He added that efforts were on to make up for lost time. As such, there was no change in the deadline for completion of the project, he said.
