Shyam Prabhodini's body laid to rest

KOLLAM Oct.10. Hundreds of persons from all walks of life paid their last respects to the ace swimmer, Shyam Prabhodini, who was drowned while performing a swimming feat in a canal at Karunagapally on Thursday. A hartal was observed today at Karunagapally town as a mark of respect to Shyam.

The body, which was fished out by divers on Thursday evening, was kept at a mortuary at Karunagapally and handed over to relatives by 11 a.m. after a post- mortem examination at the Karunagapally Taluk Hospital. Later, the body was kept at the Taluk Dheevara Sabha office to enable the public to pay homage.

It was then taken to his native village at Pandarathuruthu 7 km away. En route wreaths were placed on the body.

Among those who accompanied the body were the Rajya Sabha Member, N.K. Premachandran, the State president of the Kerala Dalit Federation, P. Ramabhadran, the Matsyafed chairperson, J. Mercykutty, the Karunagapally MLA, Rajan Babu, and the district panchayat president, Aiysha Potti.

The body was also kept at the Prabhodini Library at Pandarathuruthu for the public to pay their last respects.

The funeral rites were performed in the compound of the house.
