SFI sweeps KU college union elections

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Oct. 10. The Students Federation of India (SFI) has claimed a `sweep' in the colleges union elections of the University of Kerala held today.

According to the figures released by the SFI, the organisation won in 31, out of the 44 colleges where student organisation-wise elections were held. In two colleges, the student front led by the SFI has secured victory.

In Thiruvananthapuram district, the SFI has secured victory in 16 out of 21 colleges where elections were held. The SFI recaptured the S.N. College, Varkala, from the Kerala Students Union (KSU).

In Kollam district, the SFI's candidates secured victory in all but one of the 11 colleges where elections were held. Here, the SFI wrested the unions in the St. Thomas College, Anchal and the NSS College Kottiyam, from the KSU and the Akhil Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), respectively. The SFI also made its maiden entry into the union at the D.B. College, Sasthamkotta. The SFI won in seven out of the 11 colleges in the Alappuzha district.

The SFI has also won 59 university union councillor seats out of a total of 78.

The results at the MSM College, Kayamkulam, have been withheld following a post-election scuffle between activists of the SFI and KSU during which ballot papers were torn up. The SFI and KSU have accused each other of being responsible for the incident.

A press note issued by the KSU, here, said the organisation would observe a `protest day' on Monday, against the incidents at the MSM College. The All India Students Federation (AISF) too has claimed a `sterling victory' in today's elections. A press note issued here today said the AISF has won 13 Arts Club secretary seats, 9 vice-chairman seats, 3 general secretary seats, 11 lady representative seats and two magazine editor seats.
