Seminar on resonance spectroscopy begins today

Focus on theoretical basics of nuclear magnetic resonance

PATHANAMTHITTA: A two-day national seminar on `Cutting Edges in Resonance Spectroscopy,' organised by the Department of Chemistry, NSS College, Pandalam, will begin on Friday. In a statement issued here on Thursday, programme co-ordinators B. Rameshkumar and Ajitha M. Nair, said R. Prasannakumar, education secretary of the NSS Colleges' Central Committee, would inaugurate the seminar at the college auditorium. C.S. Gopalakrishnan Nair, Principal of the college, will preside over the inaugural meet.

The seminar will focus on the essential theoretical basics and applied aspects of nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance.

The seminar, sponsored by the University Grants Commission, is expected to help improve the analytical skill of up-and-coming chemists. The seminar will also provide the students with an opportunity to interact with noted resource persons and experts in the field, Prof. Rameshkumar said.

K.N. Rajashekharan, the University of Kerala, will deliver a lecture on `Nuclear Magnetic Resonance' at the technical session on Friday.

Topics to be covered

M.R. Prathapachandra Kurup, head, Department of Chemistry, Cochin University of Science And Technology (Cusat) will deliver a lecture on the `Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy' and another faculty member of the Department of Chemistry, Cusat, S. Sugunan will speak on `Fourier Transform IR Spectroscopy' in the afternoon session.

N. Chandrakumar of the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, will deliver the keynote address on `Principles and Applications in 2D NMR Correlation Spectroscopy' on Saturday.

D. Jayaprakash, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the University of Kerala, will inaugurate the valedictory function on Saturday afternoon.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan Nair will preside over the valedictory function.

Prof. Ajitha Nair, B. Harikumar, S.K. Vikraman Unnithan and Sasidhara Kurup will also address the meet.
