THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 9. "Alahayude penmakkal" written by the noted writer Sarah Joseph has been selected for the prestigious Vayalar Rama Varma Literary Award given every year by a trust set up to perpetuate the memory of one of the greatest poets of Malayalam.

This was announced today by the Trust member M.K. Sanu.

Prof. Sanu said that the work was selected by a judging committee consisting of Hafeez Mohammed, K.P. Mohanan and K.S. Ravikumar. The judging committee members, who were also present, paid rich tributes to the work. They described it as a lovely presentation of the culture and language of an area. It had the sanctity and simplicity of a prayer. It resisted the onslaught on nature by urban culture, they said.

The award that consists of a citation, a statuette sculpted by Kanayi Kunhiraman and a purse of Rs 25,000 will be presented to Sarah Joseph by the former Chief Minister P.K. Vasudevan Nair, who is also the president of the Trust, at a function at the Tagore Theatre here on October 27— death anniversary of Vayalar Rama Varma.
