The State should attain self sufficiency in poultry production and families in rural areas should engage in poultry production, Minister for Agriculture K.P. Mohanan has said.
The Minister was speaking during the State-level inauguration of Rural Backyard Poultry project by the Poultry Development Corporation at Panur near here on Monday.
Distributing chicks to beneficiaries at the function, the Minister said chicks would be distributed to them in the second phase only if it was ensured that those distributed earlier were properly taken care of.
Five chicks
A scheme of distributing five chicks to each family was being undertaken at Attappadi.
The scheme could help overcome malnourishment among the tribal people, he added.
Mr. Mohanan said a project of distributing 10 hens and 25 kilo of feed as a means of livelihood to widows and hapless women was also underway.
The rural backyard project was being executed in all panchayats of the Koothuparamba constituency.
As many as 500 beneficiaries from each panchayat would benefit from the project. Each beneficiary would be provided 20, 15, and 10 chicks in the first, second, and third phase of the project respectively.
The function was presided over by District Panchayat president K.A. Sarala. Panur block panchayat president K.P. Vasanthakumari and Panur panchayat president Preetha Ashok were present.
