Rs. 4.27-cr. Plan fund for Kothamangalam municipality

KOCHI, AUG 21.0 . The District Planning Committee (DPC) has approved Rs. 4.27 crores of annual Plan fund for the Kothamangalam Municipality for development projects during this financial year.

Of this amount, Rs. 1.36 crores has been set aside for development projects to improve the condition of 74 roads and bridges in the municipality, said the Kothamangalam Municipal chairman, V.V. Kurien.

A sum of Rs. 30.47 lakhs has been set aside for drinking water projects, which would aim at giving home connections for the below poverty line (BPL) category people.

Housing project

Another major project planned by the municipality is the `Home for All Homeless' scheme, which aims to provide all the homeless people in the municipal area with houses. Rs. 53.50 lakhs has been set aside for the different housing schemes under this project, said Mr. Kurien.

A sum of Rs. 35.95 lakhs has been set apart for a solid waste treatment unit to be set up in the municipality.

More than Rs. 33 lakhs has been earmarked for building an agriculture trade centre and women's industry centre in the High Range Bus Stand in Kothamangalam town.

A conservation project for protecting many large water bodies falling under the municipal area like the Ethakkachira, Valiyakavu Chira, Choorakkuzhi Chira and others has also been drawn up. A sum of Rs. 6,72,650 has been earmarked for the purpose.

Day-care centres

Another innovative scheme drawn up by the municipality is that of `Pakal Veedu,' day-care centres for the aged and disabled. An amount of Rs. 6,25,350 has been earmarked for this purpose. A sum of Rs. 6 lakhs has been earmarked for building community halls in three wards and Rs. 4.5 lakhs for constructing anganwadis in three wards.

Of the total Plan fund of Rs. 4.27 crores, the contribution from the State Plan Fund will constitute Rs. 1.62 crores, with Rs. 1.07 lakhs from the local fund of the Municipality, said Mr. Kurien. The fund from the Central projects come to Rs. 45,64,000 while the beneficiaries share will amount to Rs. 66,76,872. The rest of the amount will have to be raised through loans.
