Rise above reel life, Speaker tells MLAs

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 29. The Assembly Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, said here today that it was improper for the members of the House to collectively act in films and serials.

The Speaker said that he was personally of the view that it would affect the image of the members. However, he did not propose to ban it or deplore it as Speaker.

Mr. Ramakrishnan said that nobody from the House had sought his permission for acting.

Both members as well as media were expected to rise to the status expected of them by the people, he added, also in reference to the recent incidents involving politicians and mediapersons.

He complained that some members were using the Assembly Committees and their proceedings for campaign purposes. "This was unhealthy. The proceedings of the Committee were of secret nature and should remain so."

Committees, he said, should not be talking to the media with the authority of Ministers. Their decisions were only recommendatory in nature. The media should also keep this in mind while reporting their hearings.

He said the working of the health clinics for MLAs would be expanded. The new flats for MLAs would be allocated before the start of the session on Wednesday.
