Private college ministerial staff stir tomorrow

KOLLAM, NOV. 29. Ministerial staff of private colleges in the State will strike work on December 1 to press for their various demands. A joint action council of the various unions of the ministerial staff has been constituted to organise the strike and future agitations.

At a press conference here today, the chairman of the action council, P.K. Mathew, and the general convener, P.K. Sadasivan Pillai, said that the Government had violated tentative agreements reached with the council during four rounds of talks.

A Government order issued on September 17 curtailed many of the benefits of the staff. By implementing the grading system for colleges, many of the colleges will not be in a position to maintain senior ministerial staff posts. The promotional prospects of the last grade employees have been badly hit, they alleged

Though with pre-degree de-linking, the student strength had come down, the workload of the ministerial staff had increased since many posts were correspondingly abolished. The slicing down of peon posts was done without understanding the working system of college administration. Similarly, the posts of watchmen, sweepers and sanitation workers have been abolished.
