President arrives in city

KOCHI, APRIL 24. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, arrived here this evening to a red carpet welcome by the Naval authorities. He will be the chief guest to witness the historic moment when the country's sail ship, INS Tarangini, docks at the Southern Naval Command here tomorrow morning after completing its 15-month circumnavigation.

The Presidential aircraft of the Indian Air Force, a Boeing 737-200, landed at the Naval airport within the Naval Base at 9 p.m. The Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Madhvendra Singh, and the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Vice-Admiral Yashwant Prasad, received the President at the airport.

Mr. Kalam got off the flight along with his security staff, shook hands with the top Naval officers and walked straight to his vehicle. Before getting into the Presidential Ambassador, Mr. Kalam stopped for a few seconds to pose for the lensmen.

He will stay at the Naval guest house tonight. He will interact with children at the Naval Base tomorrow morning. The President will go on board INS Tarangini before it comes alongside the Naval jetty. He will address the sailors and officers of the sail ship and interact informally with them. Mr. Kalam is also scheduled to visit the Naval hospital, INHS Sanjivani. He will return to Delhi tomorrow afternoon.
