Power regulatory panel formed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM NOV. 13. The Cabinet, on Wednesday, named the former Director General of the Central Power Research Institute, M.K.G. Pillai, as the chairman of the new Electricity Regulatory Commission in the State.

The Chief Minister told mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting that the former Chief Engineer of the State Electricity Board, C. Balakrishnan, and the Chairman and Managing Director of the Hindustan Latex, G. Rajmohan, would be members of the Commission. Mr. Rajmohan would quit his present post to take up the new position.

The Commission would be responsible for regulation of the commercial aspects of the power sector in the State including revision of electricity tariffs.

The Cabinet also approved a draft law for preventing power thefts.

It provides for imprisonment from three months to three years for power thefts and possession of equipment used for thefts, besides fine of up to Rs. 50,000.
