Police intensify operations

Kozhikode: The police have intensified combing operations in the rural belts of Vadakara in the wake of seizure of country bombs at Varikkoli in Nadapuram in the district. Eleven bombs were seized from a pineapple grove on Monday. The searches were carried out after a seven-year-old boy sustained injuries in a bomb blast on Sunday.

Adarsh, son of a CPI(M) sympathiser, C. Ashokan, was injured when a steel bomb exploded inside the bathroom of their house, the police said.

Kozhikode Rural Superintendent of Police C. Sharafudeen said the police were taking stringent measures to curtail the spread of bomb culture in the area in view of the coming Assembly elections. Surveillance was also being conducted about various organisation and their activities. Nadapuram had witnessed violent clashes between Muslim extremist outfits and CPI(M) prior to the Assembly elections in 2001. A suspected National Development Front worker was seriously injured when an explosive device went off at Chemarathur, near Vadakara, in last November. The police had then suspected he was engaged in making a bomb when it exploded inflicting grave injuries on his hands.

A CPI(M) activist was killed and two others were seriously injured in a blast that occurred while they were allegedly engaged in making bomb at an Anganwadi at Ambalakulangara in Kakkattil in July.
