A meeting of businessmen, industrialists, and Railway officials here on Saturday demanded that the Konkan Railway’s roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) service be implemented in Kannur, which is expected to witness a major lead in export and import sectors once the Kannur International Airport and the Azhikkal port projects are commissioned.
The meeting, organised by the North Malabar Chamber of Commerce (NMCC), proposed that the Kannur South station be chosen for implementing ro-ro service. The station is suitable for installing ramp facility, weighing bridge, and the facility for fixing the height of cargo, the meeting held.
Large number of trucks reach Kannur and Kasaragod districts every day carrying export items such as plywood, rubber, and handloom products and import items such as tiles, marbles, steel, and petroleum products, the meeting said.
NMCC president K. Trivikraman presided over the meeting.
Railway officials, Lorry Owners’ Association secretary K. Bhaskaran, and Lorry Agents’ Association secretary K. Saleem participated.
