Pinarayi blames police for violence

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Oct. 31. The CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, has said that today's incidents in the capital city showed that there was no effective policing in the State.

In a statement here today, Mr. Vijayan said there was no justification for the violence unleashed by the PDP activists `with the protection of the police' as part of their agitation demanding implementation of the UDF promise regarding Abdul Nasir Maudany's release from jail.

Mr. Vijayan said though the police claimed to have dispersed the violent mob before the State secretariat, the arterial roads in the city were fully under the control of the PDP activists. They had destroyed shops, offices and private vehicles and even attacked pedestrians. For hours, they had a free run in the city. The passive attitude of the police in the face of such grave breach of peace was most despicable, he said.

The CPI(M) leader said it was most regrettable that the PDP leaders wrested police megaphones to unleash a tirade against the Government even as senior police officers remained passive spectators. The silence of the police when a quarrel between the UDF and the PDP over the release of Maudany reached the streets was most condemnable, Mr. Vijayan added.
