Pinarayi blames Antony for violence in Marad

KOZHIKODE, AUG. 21. Criticising the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government for appeasing the communal forces in Kerala, the CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, has said that the Home Department had ignored the intelligence reports of Kerala and Tamil Nadu police wings on the possibility of violence in Marad.

In his deposition before the Marad Judicial Inquiry Commission at its sitting here today, Mr. Vijayan alleged that after the communal riots in 2002, the Government had entrusted the task of restoring peace at the seaside village with communal elements. The failure of the police to take notice of these warnings gave strength to Muslim terrorist outfits to carry out the massacre. These communal for-ces, which made a fertile grou-nd for their activities in Marad, had even influenced the police. The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, who holds the Home portfolio was responsible for the incident on May 23, Mr. Pinarayi, whose examination today was the continuation of his earlier examination on July 16, said.

He accused Mr. Antony of bo-wing to the pressures of the San gh Parivar in not taking along with him the IUML leaders, P.K. Kunhalikutty and M.K. Muneer, during his visit to Marad.
