Pillai's explanation crucial: Murali

KOLLAM Nov.13. The KPCC president, K. Muraleedharan, has said that the action against the Kerala Congress(B) leader, R. Balakrishna Pillai, would depend on the explanation he is slated to submit before the UDF liaison committee on November 22.

Mr. Muraleedharan was talking to presspersons on his arrival here today to inaugurate the 20th State conference of the Kerala State Service Pensioners Association. The KPCC president was referring to Mr. Pillai's controversial speech at a PDP march in Thiruvananthapuram on October 31.

Mr. Muraleedharan said Mr. Pillai's speech, a provocative one, was one of the aspects that sparked off violence at the march. Differences of opinion among coalition partners are not uncommon. But the proper forum to air such differences is the liaison committee.

He said the AICC had appointed a committee to examine how far the various Congress-led State Governments had succeeded in implementing their election manifestos. The committee will make a study and submit the report on the UDF Government's performance in this regard.

Earlier, inaugurating the State conference, he said that personally he felt that the pension age should be increased. There is no logic behind the argument that raising the pension age would result in the younger generation losing job opportunities. He was highly critical of the Centre's attitude towards pensioners. The contention that pensioners have no relevance in the era of globalisation and liberalisation cannot in any way be recognised.

Mr. Muraleedharan informed the delegates to the conference that the issue of recognising the association as a feeder organisation of the Congress would be taken up for discussion by the KPCC executive soon. The KPCC is also appointing a committee to study the problems of pensioners. The association State president, K. Karunakaran Nair, presided over the function.
